I thought you should scan the area where the ball tracks to find the change in surface. Not to scan between the thumb hole and finger holes. Not even beside the holes where the ball doesn’t track for right or left hand bowlers.

I see why you say to put your own repeatable surface on a brand new ball. The grit doesn’t seem to be consistent out of the box.
